Jessore District, Bangladesh



Jessore district is located in the south- western borderline of Bangladesh and the first district of joint Bengal and now the 13Th largest district in Bangladesh. Once, the region was a deep forestry area. In the last few decades of 17Th century and up to mid of 18Th century, Jessore was an independent state. The naming of Jessore is debatable by historians. The ancient name of the region was “Khalifatabad.” It is the first district of joint Bengal. During the beginning of of British East India Company Period, Jessore district was formed in 1786. On the time of partition of India in 1947, Jessore was also partially divided. The entire district excepting Boangaon and Gaighata police stations were included in East Pakistan. In 1960, Mohammadpur police station of Magura sub division and Alfadanga police station of Narail subdivision were included in Faridpur district. After the liberation of Bangladesh, as the part of administrative decentralization; Jessore district was reformed in 1984. As a result four subdivisions named Narail, Magura, Jhenaidah and Sadar started their journey as separate districts. The Geo position of the district is between 22˚47’ to 23˚47’ North latitudes and between 88˚40’ to 89˚50’ east longitude.

Bordered By: Jessore District is bordered by Magura and Jhenaidahdistricts to the north, Khulna and Satkhira districts to the south, Narail and a part of Khulna district to the east, West Bengal (Indian State) to the west.

Administration: The area of Jessore is 2606.94 Sq Km. It is under Khulna Division. There are 08 Municipalities in Jessore named Jessore, Ovoynagor, Bagharpar, Sharsha, Monirampur, Keshobpur, Jhikorgacha and Choughacha. The number of Upazilla (sub district) in Jessore district is 08, named- Jessore Sadar, Ovoynagor, Bagharpar, Sharsha, Monirampur, Keshobpur, Jhikorgacha and Choughacha containing 92 Unions, 1254 Mauzas and 1419 Villages. 

Population: As per latest authentic report the total population of Jessore district is 27,64,547 (Male- 13,86,293 and Female- 13,78,254), Sex ratio 101:100, Population Density 1060/Sq Km and annual growth rate is 1.11%.

Literacy: The Literacy Rate of Jessore district is 56.50% (Male- 59.40% and Female- 53.70%), School attendance rate is 58.30% for 5 to 24 years age group.

Other Important Data: The postal code of Jessore district is 7400 and NWD Code is 0421. Total Parliament seat in Jessore is 06. During the liberation war, Jessore was under Sector Number 08. Urbanization rate of the district is 18.58% and There is no reserve forest in the region.

Rivers: Kapothakkha, Vhoyrab, Chitra, Horihor, Betraboti, Dandra, Kodla, Isamoti etc.

Agro Products: Paddy, Wheat, Sugarcane, Jute, Coconut, Banana, Betel Nut, Night Queen and many other flowers, Vegetables, Cotton, Date and Date based Products etc.
