Moulvibazar District, Bangladesh



Moulvibazar district is located in the north- eastern borderline of Bangladesh. Maulvibazar subdivision was established in 1882 as the name of south Sylhet under Sylhet district and was turned into a district on 22 February 1984. The region was named after Hazrat Shah Mustafa (R) in 1960. Vanubal Peasant Movement (1307), The Sipahi Revolt (1857), Anti British Movement, Kilafat Conference (1921), The Nankar Movement (1931-1931), Haor Karaiya Movement (1968-1969) etc are the remarkable chapters of the region. The physiography of the region was seriously changed due to the devastating earthquake on 12 July 1897. The Geo position of the district is between 24˚10’ to 24˚35’ North latitudesand between 90˚35’ to 91˚20’ east longitude.

Bordered By: Maulvibazar District is bordered by Sylhet district to the north, Tripura (Indian State) is to the south, Assam and Tripura states of India are to the east, Habiganj district is to the west.

Administration: The area of Maulvibazar is 2799.38 Sq Km. It is under Sylhet Division. There are 05 Municipalities in Maulvibazar named Maulvibazar, Sreemongol, Kulaura, Barolekha and Kamolgonj. The number of Upazilla (sub district) in Maulvibazar district is 07, named- Maulvibazar Sadar, Sreemongol, Kulaura, Rajnogor, Barlekha, Kamolgonj and Juri containing 67 Unions, 899 Mauzas and 2015 Villages. 

Population: The total population of Maulvibazar district is 19,19,062 (Male- 944,728 and Female- 974,334), Sex ratio 97:100, Population Density 686/Sq Km and annual growth rate is 1.73%.

Literacy: The Literacy Rate of Maulvibazar district is 51.10% (Male- 52.70% and Female- 49.50%). School attendance rate is 50.00% for 5 to 24 years age group.

Other Important Data: The postal code of Maulvibazar district is 3200 and NWD Code is 0861. Total Parliament seat in Maulvibazar is 04. During the liberation war, Maulvibazar was under Sector Number 04. Urbanization rate of the district is 10.84%. Total tea garden in Maulvibazar is 92. There are two gas field and 10 rubber garden in Maulvibazar. Maulvibazar achieved liberation on 06 December 1971.

Agro Products: Tea, Paddy, Betel Leaves, Betel Nut, Rubber, Pine Apple, Jack fruit, Orange etc.
