Munshiganj District, Bangladesh



Munshiganj district is located in the central Bangladesh. Today's Munshiganj was once a part of ancient glorious region of Bikrampur. The previous name of the region is "Idrakapur". There was a famous personality named Munshi Hayder Hossain in the Mughal period who was appointed by the Mughol as a local ruler for the region on behalf. Mushi was extremely great and famous for his activities for mankind and formerly Indrakpur was renamed after the great personality Munshi Hayder Hossain. In 1945, the region was promoted as a subdivision by British East India Company for administrative benefits. On March 01, 1984 Munsiganj was declared as a district under Dhaka Division. The land of the region in almost low lying area and has no hilly area. Most of the area is flooded in rainy season. The total area of Munshiganj is 954.96 Sq Km. The Geo position of the region is between 23˚29’ to 23˚45’ North Latitude and between 90˚10’ to 90˚43’ east Longitude.

Bordered By: Munshiganj District is bordered by Narayanganj and Dhaka district to the north, Shariatpur and Madaripur districts to the south, Chandpur and a part of Comilla district to the east, Faridpur and Dhaka districts to the west.

Administration: There are two Municipalities in Munshiganj named Mirkadim and Munshiganj Sadar. The number of Upazilla (sub- district) in Munshiganj district is 06, named- Munshigonj Sadar, Louhajong, Sreenagor, Shirajdikhan, Tongibari and Gojaria contain 67 Unions, 564 Mauzas and 919 Villages. 

Population: As per latest authentic report the total population of Munshiganj district is 14,45,660 (Male- 7,21,552 and Female- 7,24,108). Sex ratio 100:100, Population Density 1439/Sq Km, annual growth rate is 1.10%.

Literacy: The Literacy Rate of Munshiganj district is 56.10% (Male- 56.40% and Female- 55.70%, School attendance rate is 52.90% for 5 to 24 years old.

Other Important Data: The postal code of Munshiganj district is 1500 and NWD Code is 02. Total Parliament seat in Munshiganj is 04. During the liberation war, Munshiganj was under Sector Number 02. Urbanization rate of the district is 12.87%.

Rivers: Dhaleshari, Padma, Meghna, Choto Brhamaputra, Dhaleswari, Isamoti etc.

Agro Products: Munshiganj is famous for Potato production. Other agro products are Paddy, Jute, Vegetables, Oil seeds, Mango, Jack fruit etc.
