Mymensingh District, Bangladesh



Mymensingh district is located in the northern part of Bangladesh. The previous name of the region is ‘`Nasirabad’’. In the Mughel period the region is called ‘Momensahi’ -named after saint Momensah (R). With the passing of age, it is called Mymensingh. It is called that Haor, Jungle and Buffalo horn formed the name of Mymensingh. The region is the place of history, tradition and literature. The Mymensingha Gitiaka (Ballads) collected by Dr Dinesh Chandra Sen from the region that represent a rich and valuable treasure of world literature. Fakir and Sannyashi Revolt (1722-1790), great flood (1787), famine (1788), earthquake (1897), Sadeshi Movement (1905) etc are the remarkable chapters of the region. Mymensingh is one of the oldest districts in Bangladesh. Mymensingh district is established in 01 May 1787 and it was divided into six districts named Tangail, Jamalpur, Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, Sherpur and Netrokona in 1984. The area of current Mymensingh district is 4394.57 Sq Km. It is the 5Th largest district in Bangladesh and the largest district of Dhaka division. The Geo position of Mymensingh district is between 24˚02’31’’ to 25˚25’56’’ North latitudes and between 89˚39’ to 91˚15’35’’ east longitude.

Bordered By: Mymensingh District is bordered by Meghalaya (Indian State) to the north, Gazipur District to the south, Netrokona and Kishoreganj districts to the east, Tangail, Sherpur and Jamalpur districts to the west.

Administration: There are ten Municipalities in Mmymensingh district named Valuka, Gauripur, Muktagachha, Nandail, Fulbaria, Ishwarganj, Phulpur, Gaffargaon, Mymensingh Sadar and Trishal. The number of Upazilla (sub district) in Mmymensingh district is 12, named- Mymonshing Sadar, Trishal, Gauripur, Muktagacha, Fulpur, Haluaghat, Valuka, Fulbari, Goforgaon, Ishargonj, Nandail and Dhobaura contain 146 Unions, 2137 Mauzas and 2692 Villages. 

Population: The total population of Mymensingh district is 51,10,272 (Male- 25,39,124 and Female- 25,71,148), sex ratio 99:100, Population Density 1163/Sq Km and annual growth rate is 1.28%.

Literacy: The Literacy Rate of Mymensingh district is 43.50% (Male- 44.90% and Female- 42.20%), school attendance rate is 53.10% for 5 to 24 year age group.

Other Important Data: The postal code of Mymensingh district is 2200 and NWD Code is 091. Total Parliament seat in Mymensingh is 11. During the liberation war, Mymensingh was under Sector Number 11. Urbanization rate of the district is 15.62%.

Agro Products: Paddy, Jute, Wheat, Sugarcane, Pulse, Betel Leaf, Brinjal, cauliflower, Vegetables, Oil seeds etc.
